Land sakes alive, it's been an interesting week what with one thing and another --- Jeffrey Goldberg's piece in The Atlantic, for example.

There's no particular reason to doubt any of the allegations made by Mr. Goldberg regarding the president's contempt for military personnel, living and dead, all consistent with what we know of Mr. Trump's behavior.

I'd image that, as time passes, it will become evident that the president has a similar degree of contempt for his most avid backers, too, including those poor delusional evangelical Christians --- not the ones in the public eye who have hitched their wagons to what they perceive as his star for personal gain. But for those who have been snookered into believing that a sensible God would have anything to do with such an obvious tool.

And then there's Iowa's rapidly accelerating rate of coronavirus infection, something that can be linked at state government level to leaders, including Gov. Kim Reynolds and Sen. Joni Ernst, who have hitched their political wagons to the president.

On the local level, I'm guessing cultural myopia and ignorance are major factors. Around the world, where the virus once raged, it has been contained (but not controlled) through use of tools available here, too --- social distancing, sanitation and the wearing of face-coverings.

But Iowa is in many ways a small, isolated and primitive place; the virus arrived far later than it did in major population centers and, still, a relatively small percentage of us has been exposed to an active carrier.

That now is changing rapidly, so perhaps there's a rather grim form of hope. There's nothing like a dead loved one to convince doubters that a threat is real.
