We took a look yesterday at images from Russell that were published in the program booklet for Lucas County's Second Annual Chautuaqua Assembly, Aug. 8-16, 1903. At least two copies of that booklet may be found in the Lucas County Historical Society collection.

This morning's images are from Derby, always smaller than Russell but at the turn of the 20th century a very prosperous small town at the heart of a lively farming community.

Derby was founded in the spring of 1872 as the southern branch of the C.B.&Q. Railroad was being constructed through it and was about 30 years old when these images were taken.

Shortly after they were published, some very grand homes were built in and near Derby.

But the all of the homes shown here are relatively modest.

None of the public buildings remain.

Both of Derby's churches, the school building, the bank and a majority of the community's business buildings have vanished.

The bed of the old railroad branch now, from Chariton through Derby to Humeston, is the Cinder Path, a route for hikers and bikers rather than steam locomotives.
